What’s The Noise presents Battle Of The Bands at Pivo Pivo Glasgow
Glasgow was the setting for another battle of the bands that Quenched furiously took up, the competition was very high in quality, yet still a well-tempered affair. Each act brought a lot of support and unlike many finals; this had the atmosphere to match, What’s the Noise as a company have been quietly going about their business creating an atmosphere for musicians to gain greater experiences and opportunities on the Unsigned circuit. They are one of the few promoters who seem to care about the band first and think of the profit after, this shows me that they are all about the music.
The first act to take to the stage was rock three piece Perduramo who with their drum fuelled metal set the standard for the night for me it always seems hard for bands to open, yet they did it seamlessly. Their look and sound has hints of grunge band Sponge, which is always great to hear, there songs were unrushed and to the point, their work does exactly what it says on the tin, the clear stand out track was ‘Disillusioned Dream.’ This song was able not only to showcase the bands skills, but get a massive rise from the audience, which is what a band should look for.
The following band Port Cullas where another three piece, with a somewhat glam rock feel, great instrumentals, these guys are in this business to make music nothing else and I liked that. They were all about just having fun and playing music they want to play, which was refreshing, is their a place for them in the commercial market, well that is another question. The track which got the biggest buzz from the crowd was their new song ‘Morocco,’ it had a Ramones feel to it in regard to the chorus ‘hey hoe lets go, ’ the similarity was thoroughly enjoyed.
Betatone Distraction were my pick of the bunch as they combined indie rifts with electro synthesisers, while using a sound desk. This multi-sounding three piece really blew me away with the lead vocals and constant differentiating sounds kept the audiences’ attention, I slightly feel that this was not the best arena for them to showcase their skills as it was clear this style of music fell on deaf ears, bar the track ‘Tail Between legs.’ The track showcases all their skills while remaining true to their style of music, the way they integrate the music and vocals are reminiscent to The Whip, a real track, which hushed the critics.
The next band The Fonetics were an enthusiastic band who from the start commanded a massive crowd who eagerly awaited to hear what this indie driven four piece had to offer, unlike many indie bands though, they seemed to have their own look down and were not looking to repeat what the repeaters had done before them. For me their set was seamless in application and you could tell that these boys have really spent along time polishing their live performance which in some cases can make a set seem manufactures so I hope they keep to the level they have it to as too much more and it could take that shape. ‘The Waiting game’ Got everyone baying for more the exact cry was “One more song.”
Finally was Tasty Jailbait, excusing the name this four piece are very tasteful, with all the bad luck this band had it was about time something good happened for them. The eventual winners of the entire competition came armed with driven indie styled rifts and looks. It was a typical performance from the Scottish steered indie band, strong and to the point. The audience was catered to their sound, yet to get this following they must be doing something right so well down to Tasty Jailbait the worthy winners of battle of the bands final presented by What’s the noise.
